How Much Does Online School Cost?

Online school cost guide: student studying at home with a laptop and notebook

Online school costs anywhere from $0 for a tuition-free public virtual program to several thousand dollars a year for an accredited private online school. Your total depends on school type, billing model, course load, and how much one-on-one support is included. You can compare a real example on our online school tuition and enrollment page.

TL;DR Public virtual school is usually free for eligible residents but less flexible. Private online school trades tuition for flexibility and support, so compare the full cost after fees and funding.
  • Public is free, not cost-free: tuition-free virtual programs still leave families paying for a computer, internet, and supplies.
  • Billing model shapes the total: monthly, annual, and per-course tuition reward different paces, so match the model to your student’s plan.
  • Support and course load drive private price: mentor check-in frequency, tutoring access, and how many courses run at once all move tuition.
  • Fees sit outside tuition: enrollment fees, exam fees, and devices can add up, so get an itemized list in writing.
  • Funding can shrink the gap: Utah families can apply the Utah Fits All Scholarship toward private online tuition, and 529 plans now cover more K–12 costs.

What Does Online School Cost by School Type?

Online school pricing falls into five common models, and each one charges families differently. We cover grades 6–12 and adult diploma completion here, since online college is priced per credit and works differently.

School typeWhat families usually payWhat is usually includedBest fit for
Public virtual or state online schoolTuition-free for eligible in-state residentsCore courses, state testing, set school calendarFamilies who need no tuition and can follow a fixed schedule
Private accredited online school, full-timeMonthly, semester, or annual tuition, commonly several thousand dollars a yearAccredited diploma path, certified teachers, a set level of mentor supportStudents who need flexible pacing plus one-on-one accountability
Part-time or pay-per-courseA price per course or half creditTranscript credit for each course completedStudents topping off credits or adding a single class
Credit recoveryPer-course pricing or a course inside a monthly planRetaking only the courses a student needsStudents behind on credits who need to catch up
Adult diploma completionMonthly plans or per-course pricingOnly the remaining credits an adult needsAdults finishing a high school diploma on their own schedule

If your student is in high school, our guide to online high school costs and fees walks through typical annual ranges in more detail.

Is Online School Free?

Public online school is usually free for students who live in the state that runs it, because it’s funded the same way as a neighborhood public school. Private online schools charge tuition. “Free” covers tuition only, and families still pay for equipment and supplies.

Families in tuition-free programs typically still provide:

  • A reliable computer and webcam that meet the school’s requirements
  • Home internet fast enough for video calls and online assessments
  • Printer, supplies, and any materials the program doesn’t ship
  • An adult learning coach who keeps the daily routine on track

Public virtual programs also follow residency rules, enrollment windows, and a set calendar. Ask your district about loaner devices or fee waivers. If your student needs to start midyear, work at a different pace, or take a course outside the district’s offerings, a private option may be worth the tuition.

What Drives the Price of a Private Online School?

Private online schools bill in one of three ways: a flat annual or semester rate, a monthly plan, or a price per course or credit. Beyond the billing model, tuition comes down to six factors. Check each one when you compare quotes.

Cost factorHow it changes what you payQuestion to ask the school
Billing modelMonthly plans charge only for months enrolled; annual rates cost the same at any pace; per-course pricing scales with course load“Do I pay by the month, the year, or the course?”
Course loadPlans often cap how many courses a student takes at once“How many courses can my student take at a time?”
Mentor and teacher supportWeekly one-on-one check-ins cost more to staff than self-guided courses“How often does my student meet with a real person?”
AccreditationAccredited programs meet outside review standards for curriculum and teaching“Who accredits you, and can I see your listing?”
Add-onsTutoring, test proctoring, lab kits, and transcript fees may bill separately“What isn’t included in tuition?”
Funding eligibilityApproved providers can accept state scholarship or ESA funds“Do you accept my state’s scholarship funding?”

Mountain Point Academy is accredited by Cognia, and Cognia’s school accreditation process reviews a school’s teaching and learning practices, leadership, and student support systems.

A low price from an unaccredited program can cost more later if another school won’t evaluate the credits. Our accreditation and certification overview shows what that review covers for our students.

What Costs Can Online School Tuition Leave Out?

Ask every school what tuition does not cover. Common items billed outside base tuition include:

  • One-time enrollment or registration fees
  • Optional tutoring sessions or premium support
  • AP exam fees, which College Board lists at $99 per exam in the U.S. for 2027 exams
  • Remote proctoring for outside exams
  • Lab kits, printed textbooks, or shipped materials
  • Transcript, records, or graduation processing
  • Your own device, internet, and software

Some fees are paid to the school and some to outside organizations, such as College Board for AP exams. Ask which is which so nothing lands on your bill unexpectedly.

How Does Tuition Work at Mountain Point Academy?

Mountain Point Academy charges flexible monthly tuition, with a pay-per-course option for part-time students. Monthly plans differ by how many courses your student takes at once and how often they meet one-on-one with their Academic Mentor. Current plan prices are published on our tuition page, and a free consultation confirms which plan fits.

On a monthly plan, there’s no extra charge for each course your student takes within the plan’s limit. Your student’s Academic Mentor is a certified teacher who helps set goals, track progress, and adjust pacing. Test prep is priced separately, and you can compare every option on our online school programs page.

Middle school families use the same monthly plans through our accredited online middle school for grades 6–8. High school students working toward an accredited diploma use the same plans.

How Much Do Credit Recovery, Adult Diploma, and Test Prep Cost?

Credit recovery and adult diploma completion often cost less in total than full-time enrollment, because students take only the courses they still need. The final number depends on how many credits are missing and how quickly the student works through them.

Our online credit recovery program lets students test out of topics they’ve already mastered, which can shorten a course. Adults can follow the same flexible plans through our adult high school diploma programs, and every adult student is paired with an Academic Mentor.

Test prep pricing depends on the exam and course, so ask for current rates on your consultation call. Before you choose any plan, ask for a transcript review. Knowing which credits transfer tells you how many courses to budget for.

How Do You Estimate the Total Cost of Online School?

You can estimate a full year of online school for one student in five steps. Use the same steps for every school you compare.

  1. Record the tuition model and rate: note whether billing is monthly, annual, or per course, and convert it to a yearly figure.
  2. Add one-time costs: enrollment fees, placement tests, required hardware, and any lab kits.
  3. Add recurring costs: internet, optional tutoring, and exam or proctoring fees.
  4. Subtract funding: scholarship, ESA, or 529 dollars you’ve confirmed your student can use.
  5. Compare totals side by side: look at yearly and monthly figures, and keep a small buffer for surprises.

What Should You Ask Before You Enroll?

A short list of questions uncovers most of the cost picture before you commit. Ask admissions to confirm the answers by email.

  • What fees are required, and what is optional?
  • Are devices, textbooks, or software included?
  • When does billing start, and how do refunds work if my student withdraws?
  • Do you accept my state’s scholarship or ESA funds, and how do you invoice them?
  • How do you evaluate transfer credits from my student’s last school?
  • How often will my student meet with a teacher or mentor?

How Can Families Lower the Cost of Online School?

Funding rules changed for many families in 2025 and 2026, so the price you pay may be lower than the posted rate. Start with state funding, then savings, then your school’s payment options.

  • Utah Fits All Scholarship: According to the Utah State Board of Education, the program provides up to $8,000 per Utah K–12 student through an education savings account (ESA), and Odyssey has administered it since May 2025. Mountain Point Academy participates in Utah’s state scholarship programs, and our Utah Fits All Scholarship page explains how families apply funds toward tuition here.
  • Expanded 529 plans: Since January 1, 2026, 529 plans allow up to $20,000 per student per year for K–12 expenses. State tax treatment varies, so confirm with your plan.
  • Transfer credits: Each credit a school accepts is one less course to pay for.
  • Right-sized plans: Choosing the course load and mentor frequency your student needs keeps you from paying for support you won’t use.

Scholarship award amounts, eligibility, and approved expenses are set by the state and can change each legislative session. Confirm current terms with the program administrator before you count on the funds.

Residential treatment centers and group homes can partner with Mountain Point Academy to provide coursework for students in their care. Our RTC and group-home partnerships page explains how pricing and academic support work for programs.

Is a Private Online School Worth the Cost?

A private online school is worth the cost when its flexibility and support solve a problem a free program can’t.

If your student needs…Consider
No tuition and can follow a fixed calendarA public virtual school in your state
Flexible pacing plus a real person checking inA private accredited online school with mentor support
One or two courses, or a few missing creditsPay-per-course or credit recovery
A diploma as an adult, on a work scheduleAn adult diploma completion program
To start now instead of waiting for a semesterA school with year-round open enrollment

Low-cost, self-serve programs can work for independent students, but they may offer little live support, and unaccredited credits may not transfer.

Students who need a better fit than traditional school, including teens with anxiety, ADHD, or learning differences, athletes and performers, and students in residential programs, often value pacing and mentorship most. We accommodate students with IEPs and 504 plans, and our team works with families on the supports each student needs.

Frequently Asked Questions About Online School Costs

How is tuition set at Mountain Point Academy?

Tuition follows the plan you choose, based on course load and how often your student meets with an Academic Mentor. Current plans are listed on our tuition and enrollment page, and a free consultation confirms the right fit.

Is online school cheaper than homeschooling?

Homeschooling usually costs less in direct spending, but it asks more of a parent’s time. A 2024 Home School Legal Defense Association survey put typical homeschool spending around $1,300 to $1,650 per student a year. Our homeschooling cost breakdown compares the two side by side.

Does online middle school cost the same as online high school?

At many private online schools, middle and high school students pay on the same plan structure, since tuition follows course load and support level rather than grade. At Mountain Point Academy, grades 6–12 use the same monthly plans. Public virtual middle schools are usually tuition-free for residents, just like public high schools.

Can I use the Utah Fits All Scholarship for an online private school?

Yes, Utah families can direct Utah Fits All funds toward tuition at an approved private online school. Mountain Point Academy participates in Utah’s state scholarship programs. The student generally can’t be enrolled in a public school district, charter school, or the Statewide Online Education Program at the time of the award, so confirm timing with Odyssey.

Are there hidden fees at Mountain Point Academy?

No. Monthly tuition covers your student’s courses within the plan’s limit, mentor check-ins, and progress reporting. Beyond tuition, plan for a one-time enrollment fee and any optional tutoring, and families provide their own computer and internet.

Do online schools offer monthly payments?

Many private online schools bill monthly, which spreads the cost across the school year and avoids a large upfront payment. Mountain Point Academy tuition is paid monthly in advance, by credit or debit card or ACH bank transfer.

Will credits transfer if my student returns to a traditional school?

Accredited programs generally make credit transfer easier, but each receiving school sets its own policy. Cognia accreditation supports transfer-readiness, so ask the school your student may return to how it reviews online transcripts.

How do I get an exact tuition quote?

Book a free consultation with an admissions specialist. They’ll review your student’s needs, goals, and transcript, then explain which plan fits and what’s included.
