Schedule a Free ConsultationEvery student starts with a placement exam that shows what you already know and where the gaps are. Your coursework is built from those results, so you’re not re-studying material you’ve already mastered.
The ASVAB has 10 subtests. Four of them (Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Arithmetic Reasoning, and Mathematics Knowledge) combine into your AFQT score, which determines basic enlistment eligibility. The other subtests feed the line scores each branch uses to qualify you for specific jobs.
Subtest | What it measures | Counts toward AFQT? |
|---|---|---|
Arithmetic Reasoning (AR) | Solving math word problems | Yes |
Mathematics Knowledge (MK) | High school math concepts | Yes |
Word Knowledge (WK) | Vocabulary and word meaning | Yes |
Paragraph Comprehension (PC) | Reading for meaning | Yes |
General Science (GS) | Life, earth, and physical science | No |
Electronics Information (EI) | Electrical circuits and electronics | No |
Auto Information (AI) | Automotive systems | No |
Shop Information (SI) | Tools and shop practices | No |
Mechanical Comprehension (MC) | Mechanical and physical principles | No |
Assembling Objects (AO) | Spatial reasoning | No |
ASVAB prep works best for students who want structure without a rigid classroom schedule.
Prep time depends on your starting point and how many hours a week you can study. We’ll help you set a realistic plan during your consultation.
We’ll explain the placement exam, answer your questions about the ASVAB, and help you decide on next steps.
Your AFQT score is a percentile, not a percentage correct. It shows the percentage of a reference group of test-takers who scored at or below your score. A 60 means you scored as well as or better than 60% of that group.
AFQT category | Percentile range |
|---|---|
I | 93-99 |
II | 65-92 |
IIIA | 50-64 |
IIIB | 31-49 |
IVA | 21-30 |
IVB | 16-20 |
IVC | 10-15 |
V | 1-9 |
Each branch sets its own minimum AFQT score, and those minimums change. Your recruiter can confirm the current minimum for your branch and the line scores for the jobs you want.
Most people schedule the enlistment ASVAB through a military recruiter, and it’s given at a Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) or a Military Entrance Test (MET) site. You’ll need valid identification to be admitted, and calculators aren’t allowed.
If you want to improve your score, the official retest rules are:
The waiting periods give you a natural window to target your weakest subtests before you test again.
Pricing depends on the course and exam you choose, and online test prep costs far less than private, in-person tutoring. We’ll go over flexible payment options during your free consultation.
Utah families can use Utah Fits All Scholarship funds for test prep, which is an approved expense category. Utah Fits All is a state-funded scholarship for Utah K-12 students, and at Mountain Point Academy it applies to grades 6-12. The student must not be enrolled with a public school district when funds are awarded. Adult learners aren’t eligible for the scholarship, so we’ll walk through other payment options with you.

It depends on your starting point and how much time you can study each week. Your placement exam shows where the gaps are, and your Academic Mentor helps you set a realistic plan from there.
Each branch sets its own minimum AFQT score, and minimums can change. Your recruiter can confirm the current requirement for your branch, plus the line scores needed for specific jobs.
A 27 AFQT falls in Category IVA (21-30), which means you scored as well as or better than 27% of the reference group. Whether it's enough depends on your branch's current minimum and your education credentials, so check with your recruiter. If you're retesting, the waiting period is a good window to target the four AFQT subtests.
A 70 AFQT falls in Category II (65-92), which means you scored as well as or better than 70% of the reference group. Job eligibility also depends on your line scores, so your recruiter can tell you which roles it opens up.
You wait one calendar month after your first test, another calendar month before a second retest, and six calendar months before any retest after that.
Bring valid identification. You'll be turned away if you're late, and calculators aren't allowed. Your recruiter will confirm anything else your testing site requires.
In our prep courses, you set your own pace, work in shorter study blocks, and get regular check-ins from your Academic Mentor. Accommodations on the official ASVAB are decided by the testing program, not by Mountain Point Academy, so ask your recruiter or school counselor what's available for your test.
