Self-paced prep for all five HiSET subtests, guided by a dedicated Academic Mentor.
HiSET prep at Mountain Point Academy is self-paced online coursework, guided by a dedicated Academic Mentor, that gets you ready for the five HiSET subtests. Your course opens with a placement exam, so the lessons you work through target the gaps that exam finds rather than everything from scratch.
Before you start: check that your state offers the HiSET. The HiSET is offered in more than 30 states and jurisdictions. Many states, including Utah, use the GED instead. If your state is not on the HiSET list, our online test prep courses include GED prep, and everything below works the same way.

The HiSET is a high school equivalency exam made up of five subtests. You sit them separately, and most questions are multiple choice.
Subtest | Time | Note |
|---|---|---|
Language Arts – Reading | 65 minutes | 80 minutes for the Spanish-language version |
Language Arts – Writing | 120 minutes | Includes one written essay |
Mathematics | 90 minutes | |
Science | 80 minutes | |
Social Studies | 70 minutes |

Our coursework maps to all five, with the heaviest support where adult learners most often need it: math and the writing essay.
A placement exam opens your course. Rather than starting at lesson one in every subject, you take a placement exam that shows what you already know. Your coursework starts from there.
Coursework you can work at your own pace. Lessons are available 24/7, so study fits around a job, a family, a training schedule, or a treatment program routine.
A dedicated Academic Mentor. One person, not a queue. Your mentor handles regular check-ins, feedback on your work, progress reports, and goal setting and follow-up, which is the part self-serve test-prep software cannot do.
Certified teachers and Cognia accreditation. Mountain Point Academy has been Cognia accredited since January 2020. Details are on our accreditation and certification page.
A diploma option if you change your mind. Some students start HiSET prep and decide they would rather hold an accredited high school diploma. Our adult education program is the same school, the same mentor model, and a different credential.
| HiSET equivalency | MPA accredited diploma | |
|---|---|---|
| What you earn | A state-issued high school equivalency credential | A Cognia-accredited high school diploma from Mountain Point Academy |
| Who awards it | Your state or jurisdiction, after you pass the exam | Mountain Point Academy |
| How you get there | Pass five subtests | Complete the credits your transcript still needs |
| Where it is available | More than 30 states and jurisdictions | Available to students across the U.S. |
| Best suited to | Someone who wants a credential as directly as possible and tests reasonably well | Someone who wants a diploma rather than an equivalency, or who already holds most of the credits |
Mountain Point Academy provides academic support: self-paced coursework you can work in short sessions, mentor-set goals that keep the work manageable, and pacing you and your mentor adjust together.
How long it takes depends on how much ground the placement exam shows and how many hours a week you can put in.
Mountain Point Academy offers flexible monthly tuition plans with no hidden fees. Because what you need varies, we go through cost with you on the consultation rather than posting a single price. Full details are on our tuition and enrollment page.
HiSET exam fees are separate and are set by your state.
The HiSET is offered in more than 30 states and jurisdictions. Utah is not one of them, and several other states use the GED instead. Check the official HiSET state requirements page for your state. If your state uses the GED, our online test prep covers that too.
No. Your state or jurisdiction awards the HiSET credential once you pass all five subtests. We prepare you for the exam. Separately, we do award our own Cognia-accredited high school diploma through our adult education program, which is a different credential.
It depends on where your placement exam puts you and how many hours a week you can study. Someone who needs one subtest is in a very different position from someone starting across all five. Your mentor builds pacing around your situation on the consultation.
Five subtests: Language Arts–Reading, Language Arts–Writing, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Most questions are multiple choice, and Language Arts–Writing includes one essay. Times run from 65 to 120 minutes per subtest.
Through your state’s HiSET office or testing administrator, not through us. Fees, ID requirements, waiting periods between attempts, and available test dates are all set at the state level.
Accommodations on the exam are approved by your state’s HiSET office or test center, and their decision is final. We provide academic support and flexible pacing in your coursework, and we can talk through how to structure study around what you need.
Tuition depends on what you need, so we cover it on your free consultation. Monthly plans are available with no hidden fees. HiSET exam fees are charged separately by your state.
