The Pros and Cons of AI in Education

The Pros and Cons of AI in Education

While AI can generate significant advancements in learning, technology, and innovation, it also has it’s limitations. As educators, it’s important to be aware of all it can and can’t do, so educators can understand how to adapt and utilize this new technology. This week, we break down the pros and cons of AI, particularly ChapGPT.

Pros of ChatGPT and AI:

1. Work Smarter, Not Harder: ChatGPT is a treasure trove of knowledge, capable of providing information on a wide range of topics. It was designed to gather lots of information to offer valuable insights, answer questions, and contribute to effective conversations. It can help when someone is looking for quick information to be able to research and compare on a specific topic.

2. Idea Generation: Sometimes writer’s block claims the best of us, so with ChatGPT as an option, it can help automate the thought process, generating ideas for you to start writing about. By using the available resources with ChatGPT, you can save time, generate new ideas, and create content in a fraction of the time, especially if you are fresh out of ideas.

3. Personalized learning: ChatGPT can recognize different user preferences, providing a more personalized approach to its responses. Because it can learn from interactions with users, it starts to recognize the patterns of the user to help make ir more engaging and influential to the individual. Another AI we have used, ALEKS math can personalize learning based on assessments, gauging where the student is and meeting them with their learning to kick out a report individualized to what that student needs.

4. Educational Tool for Teachers: Particularly with educators, this can be an opportunity for teachers to support their assignments. ChatGPT can generate worksheets with sample problems and ideas for students to work through, saving time for educators in lesson-planning so they can focus on all the other things they have to make time for.

Cons of ChatGPT and AI:

1. Lack of Core Skills: Although ChatGPT is well-versed in producing text-based responses, it takes away from creativity and critical thinking patterns. It may not recognize the individual’s creativity and thought processes, sounding emotionless and lacking general human understanding. This is where it becomes the responsibility of the individual to make sure they infuse that writing with creativity and critical thinking of their own.

2. Potential for Misinformation: Since ChatGPT’s responses are based on patterns and information present in its training data, it can contain certain inaccuracies or biases. With any AI model, you as a user need to be sure to “fact-check” so as not to present false or inaccurate information.

3. Overlooks real-world experiences: Since ChatGPT can’t mimic human emotion, it can easily disregard human connection. It doesn’t take into account the experiences of the user and how that might affect their view on a topic or idea. It might also be evidenced that ChatGPT might lack logical coherence or contradicts itself.

4. Ethical Considerations: Plagiarism is a major concern when it comes to ethics regarding AI. Other issues such as privacy, data sharing, and other misuse might arise. As educators move forward, they need to consider guidelines and regulations to help monitor the effective use of AI.

While AI can be a huge support, the pros and cons need to be considered as educators and parents have conversations with students on the proper use of AI models.
